Dresser Upcylce

Finally a post about a project that I worked on for the baby's room!! Better late than never.

So anyways, I have this old antique dresser from my teen years, that mom also used when she did hair. My little brother had used it until my dad bought him a new bedroom set. Well my dad had asked if I wanted it and of course I said yes. At the time I didn't know I was pregnant and really had no idea what I was going to do with it. So it stayed in my dad's garage until a few weeks before I had the baby.

I went on maternity leave at 38 weeks so I got busy working on the dresser. It took me a full week to go from start to finish. One because I was 38 weeks pregnant and two it was really hot to really do too much. I would wake up early and work on it for about an hour or two, that was because I had to let paint dry and that was just about all I could do without getting too tired. Ok now on to how I went about redoing an old dresser.

First I cleaned and lightly sanded the dresser. There were a lot of stickers on this dresser and thanks to goo-be-gone I was able to get them all off.

Next I primed the entire dresser.

Then I painted the dresser. First 2 coats, then I antiqued it with a light brown coat of paint. After that dried I painted another light coat and then used a polyurathane to seal it.

Final product! I love it! I added new knobs and pulls that I found at Hobby Lobby. It has a mirror which you can see on the floor. I still haven't found the right pins to able to hang the mirror on the dresser.

Baby girl will be able to use this dresser for awhile.

Homemade Flour Tortillas

The other I wanted to make tacos but found that I didn't have tortillas on hand. At first I felt defeated b/c I really wanted to make tacos for dinner. Then the light went off, I can make homemade flour tortillas! So I found a recipe and modified it a bit to work for me. Here is how my tortillas turned out. Please don't laugh b/c they are not round, but they sure were tasty!

Here's what they looked like as I was rolling them out.

This is what they looked like after they were cooked. mmmm

Flour Tortillas

Ingredients
  • 4 cups flour (white or whole wheat)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tbsp lard or Crisco
  • 2 cups water
Cooking Directions
  1. In medium bowl mix flour, salt, and baking powder. Then mix in the lard until it has been blended in. Add water and mix until the dough comes together. Place on a lightly floured area and knead for a few minutes until smooth and elastic. Then divide into small balls.
  2. Preheat a skillet over med-high heat. Roll the balls into thin, round tortillas. Then place onto hot skillet, cook until bubbly and golden brown. Then flip until other side is golden brown.
